Activities
The beauty of the FREE FLOW is its remotedness from noisy roads, large hotels, discoteques and tourist crowds. Many yoga practicioners living in big cities appreciate this solitude, quiet and proximity to nature. While relaxing with a fresh fruit juice in the lounging area by the river, you can enjoy the sight of the soaring eagles, fishing herons and iridiscent kingfishers, Goa's trademark rare birds. To greet the rising sun, make your way up the nearby hill, which lends a breathtaking view on the gilded immensity of the Indian ocean on the one side and the green valley imbued with the sounds and smells of the morning puja on the other. And in order to bid a daily farewell to Surya with a sunset meditation, fifty steps will get you to the beach.
Daily routine
During a typical workshop, life at the FREE FLOW starts around 6 a.m. with the blaring sounds of a conch or OM NAMAH SHIVAYA. Breakfast is offered at 9:30 p.m., after the morning yoga session and bathing. The guests are then free until lunch, followed by the lecture and evening practice. During the free time, you can relax on the beach and do some fascinating local sightseeing, but in order to get a bunch of new impressions and healthy fun you won't even have to step out of the FLOW.Massage
Massage is one of the most healthy pleasures one can get. Timofey and Yulia are qualified massage therapists who will help you correct your posture and improve flexibility and overall shape through deep-tissue massage and Thai bodywork, greatly appreciated by anyone practicing yoga. Women are sure to enjoy the slimming and rejuvenating effects of spa treatments.Kiting
Besides yoga, there is a range of exciting activities for the sporty types, including kiting, which gets particularly good after New Year when the winds grow stronger, and paragliding from nearby mountains over the ocean.Music
At least once a week we have African drumming classes to which everyone is welcome. On special occasions - or just on a whim - an international gang of our musician friends get together around the campfire to play drums, guitars, flutes and whatever other instruments they can play, and sing songs in various languages, and Indian bhajans and mantras.Sometimes we invite classical Indian or Sufi musicians, bellydancers and other interesting performers to have an evening show at the yoga hall or our new stage in the lounging area. Every other evening we show movies projected on a big screen. Usually it's films about yoga and Indian philosophy, as well as other interesting international features. We appreciate when out guests bring their own movies for everyone's viewing pleasure.
Shopping
The closest outpost of civilization - the small town of Arambol - is about 20 minutes of beach walk from the FREE FLOW camp. There you will find most everything you might need - a large number of restaurants, Internet cafes, local SIM cards for your mobile phone and fun shopping chip & chic style, as well as colorful pictures of Indian country life and dreadlocked hippies to whom Goa owes its worldwide fame.If you continue walking down the beach past Arambol, you'll pass a row of restaurants and shopping stalls running along some picturesque cliffs and arrive to a secluded beach called Sweet Lake. It's main attraction is a pretty sweet-water lake fed by a river running down the mountain. Following one of the paths leading up the hill, you will find yourself deep in the jungle and eventually come to a banyan tree that alone looks like a whole grove. Banyan trees give a lot of shadow and are highly revered in India. Under the banyan tree there is a Shiva Lingam, symbol of Lord Shiva, founder and patron saint of yoga. There are always colorful-looking people sitting there around the bonfire playing drums and smoking chillums.
On the way back, don't forget to smear yourself with medicinal yellow mud found at the pools on the river banks, so when you come out to the ocean, you'll doubly enjoy the swimming and feel rejuventated afterwards.
Having explored the Arambol area, you can rent a scooter or motorcycle (that is, if you know how to use them, because the chaotic Indian left-lane traffic can be dangerous for unexperienced drivers), or just call a taxi - and go adventure-hunting. Thirty minutes of drive south of Arambol, there is Chapora with its famous Juice Center where you can entertain yourseld with some of the world's best freak watching. Next stop is Anjuna, the party central where you'll catch a glimpse of the famous Goa trance scene. If you choose to go north instead, soon you'll come to a river ferry and cross over to the state of Maharashtra. On top of a high hill overlooking the aptly named Paradise Beach, there are the picturesque ruins of Red Fort, an old Portugese defense structure now completely taken over by the jungle and inhabited by hundreds of monkeys.
For those interested in history and architecture, the sumptuous Catholic churches of Old Goa will be a real treat. And if you are looking to treat yourself, your relatives and friends to some unusual presents, visit the Anjuna flea market on Wednesday, the Indian marketplace in Mapusa on Friday and one of the two Saturday Night Bazaars in Baga and Arpora. On top of traditional Indian stuff brought from all over the country, you'll find there a bunch of original European and Japanese designers and funky entertainers.
